Debra Sweeney about Debra Sweeney:

Cuppella, 80 x 80 cm
I use images on my palette as well as paint. Objects I am attracted to I photograph.

Each image I put upon my palette is there from fancy and curiosity.
I photograph objects up close to create a different perception of them, an image which sometimes becomes unrecognisable.
They become a component part.
When I compose a piece the connection of these component parts is primarily colour, form and theme.

And to unify the images I paint into them to create one image.
Although my paintings emerge from images from my life they become something entirely separate from it on their completion.

This disconnection is deliberate.
Because the images are taken out of their primary context, their meaning is changed and this displacement is compelling to me.
The use of the familiar to create the unfamiliar.

To catch the eye with something known and to keep the attention with something unknown.
It is an attempt to enable looking.
Involving time, involving the mind and enlivening the emotions.
It is a simple process of redefinition.

I look and find to create a more accessible way to look and find.
